CASL hosts meeting to discuss DCSF accredited schools provider proposals

DCSF Meeting

On 12 January 2010 CASL hosted a meeting to discuss the implications for Church of England schools and academies of the DCSF's proposals about accredited providers.  The Becket Chapel in the precincts of Peterborough Cathedral was the venue for consideration of the DCSF's proposed criteria and their impact on the creation of future Church of England schools and academies.

Nearly forty delegates attended in spite of heavy snowfall in some areas of the country.  Academy Principals, Diocesan Directors of Education, representatives of AASSH, and representatives of the National Society Framework Companies all made constructive contributions.

The introduction session was led by Rob Gwynne of the National Society and the keynote session on Possible Solutions was led by Adrian Pritchard, Chief Executive of CASL.

Paul Schofield from the Office of the Schools Commissioner at the DCSF responded to questions from the morning's discussion groups.

Bishop David of Grimsby inspired the delegates with his keynote address on The Opportunity to Fulfil the Mission. (Link to summary of address)

A proposal document, informed by feedback from the afternoon discussion groups, which had considered possible solutions, was sent to all delegates after the meeting.

This document set out three possible options:

Option 1: Let the market decide

Option 2: Let the National Society become the lead sponsor

Option 3: A Joint Venture Partnership

CASL's Board subsequently endorsed Option 3, as it safeguards the knowledge and expertise of the current CASL team.  This proposed the formation of a Joint Venture Company.  The outline sees the proposed New Schools Trust with a board with members appointed by the National Society, representatives of Diocesan Directors of Education, representatives of a School Leadership Group and members appointed by CASL.
