The Bishop of Winchester Academy in Bournemouth was officially opened by the Right Reverend Michael Scott-Joynt, the current Bishop of Winchester, on Wednesday 29 September 2010.

The academy is sponsored by the Diocese of Winchester, the University of Winchester, Bournemouth School and Bournemouth School for Girls.  Its specialisms are Mathematics and Enterprise & Innovation.  Its logo includes the motto Sapere Aude, which can be translated as: have the courage to be wise.

Bishop of Winchester candles

At the formal opening service all year 7 students were presented with candles which had the academy logo on them.  As well as encouraging the students to take every opportunity to learn new things, the candles also symbolised that Jesus, the light of the world, is a light in the darkness and able to lead the students on the journey of life and learning.  Rev Jenny Nightingale, the academy's chaplain, led prayers for the new community of the academy:

where there is weakness, give us strength;
where there is disagreement, give us tolerance;
where there is misunderstanding, give us patience;
where there is hurt, give us the courage to forgive and the grace to accept forgiveness.

The Bishop of Winchester Academy serves its local area and is for students of all faiths and those of none.  The academy aims to provide:

  • a high quality secondary education which will provide students for the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead; and
  • a positive experience of Christianity in the daily life of the academy.
